From the standpoint of tactical gear, the right tactical hat gives protection from the elements in a way that enables the user to perform his or her duty better. On the average, 80% of body escapes through the head. So when in cold weather, a hat maybe required to not only protect from the sun but to conserve body heat. In warm weather, the hat helps the head cool the body by providing shade and wicking of perspiration. The bill or brim of the hat is most instrumental in providing shade. Shade not only helps to keep the body cool but provides protection from glare and direct sunlight to the eyes. In many duty situations, unencumbered eyesight is crucial. Tactical ball caps with good-sized bill’s protect the face from sun and give the eyes protection they need to see clearly. Ball caps are the most common hat worn by law enforcement and military personnel for this very reason. Of course, athletes, such as runners and baseball players, have long used these type of hats to aid their performance. Fit and function are probably more important to duty personnel than style. Boonie hats with large brims certainly are not stylish but they do perform well in rugged environments.
