The book was made in to a play by Christopher Bond in 1973. Then, in 1979, it was turned into a musical with Stephen Sondheim writing the music and lyrics. It began on the streets of London a long, long time ago. Benjamin Barker was a barber and happily married to a lovely woman named Lucy and had a beautiful daughter named Johanna. Judge Turpin a cruel and bitter Judge of the law saw the Barkers one day in the streets and he found Johanna so lovely that he decided he would take her away from Mr. Barker and keep her for himself. He had Mr. Barker arrested and convicted on false charges. Barker was imprisoned and sent off to a prison camp in Australia for 15 long years of hard labor – for a crime he did not commit. Mr. Barker managed to escape and was rescued at sea by a kind young sailor named Anthony. Changing his name to Sweeney Todd, Barker returned to London with | |
